Apply for an eTA to Travel to Canada

What is an eTA?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Who needs an eTA?

Citizens of the following countries need an eTA to travel to Canada by air:

How to apply for an eTA

You can apply for an eTA online through the Government of Canada's website. The application process takes about 10 minutes and costs $7 CAD. You will need the following information to apply for an eTA:

• Your passport number
• Your date of birth
• Your country of citizenship
• Your email address
• A credit or debit card

Once you have applied for an eTA

Once you have applied for an eTA, you will receive an email within 72 hours indicating whether your application has been approved or denied. If your application is approved, your eTA will be valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Travelling to Canada with an eTA

When you travel to Canada by air, you will need to present your eTA to the airline at check-in. You will also need to present your eTA to the border services officer when you arrive in Canada.
