Billions of Cicadas Set to Emerge After 17 Years

Trillions of periodical cicadas, known for their distinctive buzzing sound, are expected to emerge in a few weeks' time after spending 17 years underground.

Brood XIX, which last emerged in 2007, is set to appear in 12 states, including the Washington, D.C., region. This is the largest brood of periodical cicadas in the United States, and it is expected to be the most visible in the Washington, D.C., area since 1987.

The cicadas are harmless to humans and animals, and they do not bite or sting. However, they can be a nuisance due to their noisy mating calls.

The cicadas will likely emerge in late April or early May, depending on the weather. They will spend the next several weeks above ground, mating and laying eggs. The nymphs will then hatch and burrow underground, where they will stay for 17 years before emerging again.
