Migraines: Understanding the Severe Pain and Associated Symptoms

Defining a Migraine

A migraine is a type of headache characterized by intense, throbbing or pulsing pain. Unlike ordinary headaches, migraines can also manifest with a range of additional symptoms.

Symptoms Beyond the Headache

Migraines typically involve symptoms that extend beyond the head pain itself. These symptoms may include:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Blurry vision or seeing spots
  • Fatigue and weakness

Due to the severity of these symptoms, migraines can significantly disrupt daily activities and impact quality of life.

Phases of a Migraine

Migraines often follow a distinct pattern with different phases:
  1. Prodromal phase: Occurs before the headache begins, characterized by subtle symptoms like fatigue, irritability, or food cravings.
  2. Aura phase: A temporary neurological disturbance that may precede the headache, causing visual disturbances, tingling, or numbness.
  3. Pain phase: The actual headache, which can last several hours or even days and is accompanied by the throbbing or pulsing sensation.
  4. Postdromal phase: After the migraine subsides, individuals may experience lingering effects such as fatigue, concentration difficulties, or mood changes.
